Run for the Fallen 2010

On the weekend of August 21/22, 2010, we are encouraging anyone, wherever they are, to go out and run/walk one mile for a fallen service member killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Similar to our events in 2008 and 2009, we will post runs here, in order!, by state and country. Please email contact [at] runforthefallen [dot] org with information about your run.

Our goal is to again have all 50 states participate. Last year, there were over 5,000 participants in 35 states and four countries, running a combined total of over 31,000 miles. Help us to continue to honor and remember our service members, bringing people and communities together. Together, let us Run for the Fallen.

To learn more about the 2008 run that started it all, please visit To Them That’s Gone, the Run for the Fallen documentary.

What about New York City? A great run to do would be to run the entire length of Manhattan on the West Side. Start in Battery Park City right by Ground Zero and run up past the George Washington Bridge and end four miles North in Inwood Hill Park. It’s flat all the way and probably about 12-16 miles total. Does RFTF have anything organized for Manhattan?

We will be doing our RUN FOR THE FALLEN here in ELK HORN, IOWA on Saturday, August 21st with most of my help coming from the Elk Horn American Legion. They have just started a War Memorial and this is a great way to honor our fallen soldiers and make the surrounding communities aware of the Memorial plus help to raise funds for it! I have only lived here (moved up here from Texas) but I love it and I have been told the community will be 100% supportive!! My main objective is to keep my son’s memory live–CPL BRANDON WILLIAM SMITHERMAN, he was KIA 10/31/07 in Mosul, Iraq. He was the company commanders driver (he drove a Bradley tank) and they were ‘fired upon’ and he went after the enemy!! In the process, ran over an IED the size of a refrigerator and it killed him & his commander, Capt Tim McGovern of Ill.
So, any one in our area–we are in south east Iowa (about 50 minutes west of Omaha NE) on Aug 21st please come on down, we would love to have yall join us!! registration is at 4:00pm and the RUN Ceremony begins at 5:00pm and last until whenever!!

My brother in law was killed in afghanistan on July 10, 2010. My family will be participating in the run in Texas and New York. I am an airforce wife in South Dakota- I was wondering how these get set up. I would love to have one out there. If anyone could let me know that would be great.

I wish that Fort Benning would organize something here on post. I did this 2 years ago at Fort Campbell and would love to do it again :(
