Final Day Event: Sunday August 24

Run for the Fallen will finish its apolitical memorial run just outside Arlington National Cemetery on Sunday, August 24, 2008. It is on this day that we run together in honor of all service members killed in both Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. You can join us by planning an event in your community on our last day. If you have any questions, please email our media relations manager, Shauna, at shauna@runforthefallen.org. 8 a.m. Run begins, crossing over Memorial Bridge into Washington D.C. (The run is Closed ALL runner spots have been filled.)

9:15-9:30 a.m. Run returns over Memorial Bridge, ending near the Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop.

10 a.m. Closing Remarks – Near the Arlington National Cemetery Metro stop, where the run ended.

You can join us by planning an event in your community on our last day. Wherever you are, run or walk one mile for a fallen service member. Our goal is to have runners from all fifty states remembering our service members on August 24th. Download a runner’s bib to show your support. Share your event and mileage with us, and if you run for a particular service member, his or her name. We’ll be posting America’s combined mileage here on the website as a reflection of remembrance for our beloved heroes.

There are remembrance runs being held in four countries: Phillipines, Brazil, Tanzania, England and thirty-five different states: AK, AL, AZ, CA, CT, CO, FL, GA, HI, KY, IL, IN LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI and WV.Currently, runners pledged 4462 miles for fallen soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen.Below is a list of just some of the individuals/organizations running with us on Sunday, August 24.
*Mark Vital/Highland City Striders - Massachusetts - Organizing a 64 mile run for the 64 service members killed from Massachusetts. The run will begin from the border of New Hampshire and end at the border of Rhode Island.
*Elizabeth Cassano/Groovy Girls Triathlon - Alexandria, LA - Participants will dedicate their first mile of their run to a fallen service member.
*Mary Hahn Ward - North Carolina - Organizing a run for service members. All proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
*Debbie Wenstrom - Sarasota, FL - Organizing a half marathon for service members. 30 participants either relaying or running the entire 13 miles.
*Bekkie Wright/Silk City Striders - Manchester, CT - Running in Connecticut for service members.Rich Frank/Marble Valley Runners - Marble Valley, VT - Running in Vermont for service members.
*Kevin Drury - Alexandria, VA - Running one mile every day of our 71 day run for a service member and with us on our last day in Arlington VA.
*Kavanaghs - Dallas, PA - Organizing a run for local service members from North Eastern Pennsylvania. The run will take place in Dallas, PA.
*Celia L. Perkins/Hood to Coast - Portland, OR - Supporting runs in Oregon for service members. Posted on the ORRC calendar.
*Matt Catterson - Yakutat, AK - Will run three miles each day for one month beginning June 14 for service members killed who were stationed in Alaska. Matt will run 17 miles on August 24 for fallen soldiers who were from Alaska.
*US Army Capt. Christopher S. Zeman - Fort Carson, CO - Will run 6 miles on our last day, each mile to represent a year of military service. Capt. Zeman runs for his fellow soldiers, including SSG Frank J. Gasper of Merced California, who was killed by an IED one day before Memorial Day, 2008.
*Luis Osorio - Ft. Lewis, WA - Will run 5 miles for service members. SFC (Ret.) Luis Osorio served in Iraq with the 3rd Stryker Bde from 2006-2007. *Ben Collar - Upper Arlington, OH - Will run 2 miles for service members.
*Matt Bilger - Gahanna, OH - Running during our final week, 25 miles for those fallen from Ohio.
*Leigh Fitzgerald - Kapalua, HI - Ran on June 14 for service members and will again on August 24.
*Katie Crowley - Will run for Andrew T. Engstrom on August 24.
*Karlton Bontrager - Providence, RI - Organizing a run for all fallen service members from Rhode Island.
*Ron Wenger - Martinsburg, WV - Getting friends together around WV to transit the Eastern Panhandle of WV in thier antique cars.
*Skyler Snider (age 11) - MI - will be running a mile in Michigan on Day 35 of our run, July 19th, in memory of his mom’s former bosses stepson Master Sgt. Anthony R. C. Yost. He will also run a mile on August 24th in MI, in memory of all of our fallen Soldiers.
*Phyllis McElligott - Rochester, NY - 23 year old nephew Spc. Christopher Simpson was killed by a road side bomb. In his memory she will get a team together and run with Run for the Fallen on Aug 24 in Rochester New York.
*Frank H. Simmons Jr. (Retired US Army) - Malden, MO - Organizing a run in the state of Missouri for those servicemembers lost, and were assigned to any military base in MO state.
*Steve Anderson (Retired US Army) - Hampstead, MD - Running in Hampstead, MD on August 24 for a hometown fallen Hero, Cpl. Joshua D. Snyder. Josh’s Unit: 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.
*Elizabeth Medaris - Florence, AL - Will run 8 miles in Florence, AL. It will be to honor the memory of her son’s best friend, Cpl Jamie LIndsey, KIA Baghdad, 2007, as well as in honor of all troops, those fallen, those wounded, and those still serving. *Brenda - NV - Wants to organize a run in the Las Vegas, Boulder City, Henderson, NV area. 1 to 5 mile run. Her husband is a Naval Veteran, and her 16 yr.old son is involved with the Devil Pups. (Marines). Pinnkky1@hotmail.com
*Jimmy Brown -Dallas, PA - Mike Cleary’s hometown - Planning a run as part of his senior project.
*Major Marty J. Eaton (West Point ‘80) - Huntsville, AL - Is planning a Final Day Event, “North Alabama Run for the Fallen”. He’s hoping to have local running groups, JROTC join in. Run ‘bibs’ will be available, encouraging people to run for a particular service member. Currently stationed at Restone Arsenal, AL. Looking for other Point grads to run for all West Pointers who have fallen. Donations will go to Wounded Warrior Project.
*Fletcher Malcom - Philadelphia, PA - Hamilton ‘03 (1st Lt. Mike Cleary’s classmate) hopes to locate other Hamilton Alumni in the Philly area to run together on Aug. 24th.
*Laurie Kwolek - Fort Bragg, NC - Womak Army Medicial Center, “Willing for the Wounded” plans to have as many participants as possible, running from intersection of Long & Reilly Rd. to Long & Grueber.
*Jennifer Calhoun - Lehigh Valley area of PA - Gathering a group of runners to run & remember. Her brother is a Marine currently serving in Iraq.
*Erik Van Houten - San Luis Osbipo, CA - Runs in memory of all fallen Marines and Corpsmen in 1st Battallion 4th Marines. His pledge 14 miles
*Petriece Culbertson (MSG Ret) - Ft. Irwin, CA - has run/biked 211 miles so far, her 279 by Aug. 24th.
*Nick Sarro-Waite - NY, NY - (Hamilton ‘03) Will participate in a run with other Hamilton Alumni on Aug. 24th
*Connie Holle - Austin, TX - Has pledged to run 2 miles for her daughter and fiancé, both active duty Marines. Her pledge 2 miles
*Jim Grant - Jakarta, Phillipines - Hiked 19.8 kilometers and climbed 2 kilometers for the run, 13.6 miles.

*Erin Flanagan - NH - Mike Cleary’s sister is running 1 mile everyday. Her pledge 69 miles

Great idea! I ran a search on http://www.icasualties.org and found that - from the greater Omaha (NE) metro area - there have been 13 service people who have lost their lives in service to our country. Last night, I found that we are 50 name cards short for the flag markers. Who could answer the call to as a service project? The Girls Scouts. As I walked out of church this morning, the local Girl Scouts were setting up in the park, when asked if they could help, the girls from Troops: 5043 (junior), 801 (cadette), 5067 (junior) and 5164 (brownie) came through.

They were fantastic, and truly represented the true spirit os the scouts…to serve.

I have just heard about runforthefallen.org on CNN and wanted to relay how elated I am that you are doing something of this nature to memorialize the fallen from OIF. However, I am concerned that the website only advertises fallen Soldiers. I am an Airman in the United States Air Force and also a veteran of OIF. It is a common mistake to label all military members as Soldiers, but this term is geared towards the Army specifically. We are Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. We all play our own parts within the military. Although the term Soldier is honorable and seems all-inclusive to most civilians, it is incorrect. As I watched CNN tonight, I was moved by your cause and think it is a great way to bring local and national awareness to the people of this country who sometimes forget what is given for them. At our July 4th event, we pledge to spread the news of your cause and organize a local run through the Lehigh Valley area. My brother is a Marine currenlty serving in Iraq. We ask for prayers for his safe return and for all of those who remain in the fight. The county, YMCA, local T.V. stations, and a State Rep. are assisting as are local stores and buisnesses. Okay ya’ll from Mississippi, or surrounding areas who want to participate….unfortunately I received word from Run for the Fallen that we were not following some of the guidelines, but our heart is in the right place. They encouraged us to continue our run, just to donate to one of their listed charities…the way I see it is that the money was going to go to one anyway. So, we are still doing our 5K the way we planned and now calling it 5K for Mississippi’s Fallen Soldiers! It is going to be a great event, and I could not be more excited how it is falling into place so smoothly. I met his mom through a mutual friend via email. Julie and I had been emailing for almost a year until we met for the first time in Topeka, Kansas on Flag Day - Saturday, June 14th of this year. Julie and I were in Topeka, Kansas for The Reading - a Reading of the names of the fallen from Iraq and Afghanistan. Julie Read the name of her son Matthew Snyder - killed in Iraq On March 3, 2006.

In an email to Julie shortly after I came home I mentioned that my birthday was July 18th. Julie responded back with an urgent “please read this ASAP’ message. In Julie’s message back to me she informed me her son and I share the same birthday. In all the emails over the year we never spoke of birthdays.

Thanks for doing this run to honor all the fallen men and women, including my son, Sgt. Mark Maida (5-26-05). Ironically, he was stationed at Ft. Irwin where the run began and his “mile” was on July 12, the first birthday of his nephew, Callum Mark. Unfortunately, we could not be in Gentry, Tx. that day. But we will run for him and many others on Aug. 24 with a support group in Milwaukee,
Wi. You’re doing a great job of remembering all of them!

I am running on the 24th in South Jersey around the Rutgers-Camden area. I running for Lt. William Edens, Sgt. Eric Morris both killed by a roadside bomb on April 28, 2005, in Iraq serving with the 1-5 Stryker Brigade from Ft. Lewis, WA. Also for Sgt. Stephen Sherman who was killed on February also with the Stryker Brigade. Looking for other runners around the South Jersey area who would be interested in joining the run.

I was able to take part in run on Aug 5th to honor Lt. Jared M. Landaker what an honor to be a part of that special event at mile marker 6 on US 41 in Noah, TN..I was able to meet his parents, Joe a MARINE and Laura, what great folks. We as Americans should be proud of the men and women we honor in this effort . We also should proud of and thankful for those youing people who make this happen.

Update…My run/walk has now become a 3 mile walk. I got a hold of the mayor and have a meeting with the city commissioners and we are getting the law enforcement together, restaurnats donating cases of water and ice.Flyers are all over town and i have a newspaper article coming out on the 12th of August. Freedom Riders are rding their motorcycles from our community and each over 299 bikers are riding 3 miles each. i am expecting of the regular people of the community atleast 100 of them. This has gotten to be a big even for our town. i will not know how many miles we have all pledged together but i will make sure i do post it after the run on August 24th. My run/walk starts at 9:00am that morning and registration and runners to sign waivers will be at 7:00am that morning. Keep up the goodwork guys!!! Im glad to see were all doing this for an awesome cause.Also i am getting a big banner and having everyone sign it after the event and sending it to a unit over in Iraq and letting them know they DO have support at home.

In support of the final day of Run for the Fallen, members of the Hamilton College and Mohawk Valley communities are invited to participate in a one-mile walk/run beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, on the Hamilton campus to remember alumnus Michael Cleary ‘03 and all other service men and women who have died in Iraq.

Those interested in participating will meet at the front of the Hamilton Admission office on Campus Road near the trees dedicated to Michael. The run/walk will finish at the Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center where refreshments will be served.

Our family, My husband LTC. DeFries (USMC), my daughter, age 14 and I, would like to run in the Charlottesville area on the 16th of August. I plan to run from the Ivy area through the city+ (10-15 miles) and my husband, who is a 2 tour Iraq veteran, CH-46 pilot and my daughter, are good for about 4-5 miles. I have spoken to Carol Barnett and have called the contact in D.C. that she gave me, but I have not heard back. We are running in honor of Capt. Jay “Sweetpea” Aubin, USMC. He was killed in March of 2003 in a CH-46 crash, soon after arriving in country. He was a great guy!
(I am looking for any info about the exact route that day).

Today the entire Cross Country team at Southwest Christian School ran in memory of Corporal Jeremy Allbaugh. Today was Jeremy’s marker day with Run for the Fallen. The team total was about 80 miles. I ran a mile for Jeremy too.

Canadian for a 1 mile run/walk on the 24th. We are hoping for 400 folks to be able to have each individual of the 391 fallen soldiers from Texas honored by one person carrying his or her name around the route. We welcome anyone who would like to join us to do so. We will be starting from 1st Christian Church’s lawn at 4 PM on the 24th. Bibs, flags with soldiers individual names and water will be provided.

I guess I should clarify that we are running in Canadian, TX. Not in Canada!

There is an organization that created a new national symbol that is making its way through congress. A flag to honor all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice at any time since our country began. Not only killed in action but killed in military service. The Honor and Remember Flag and emblem would be a respectful compliment to any tribute to our fallen troops. My mom and I are organizing a one mile walk/run at 6:30 AM on Sunday, August 24th in Pawnee, Illinois; we will be joined by members of our community, as well as our local Boy Scout organization to honor all of our fallen soldiers and their families. In addition to the one mile walk on Sunday, my mom and I will each be running/walking 8 miles on August 23rd to specifically honor the following nine soldiers:
Pfc. Michael C. Balsley, Pfc. Brian A. Botello, Spc. Elias Elias, Sgt. Alexander H. Fuller, Sgt. Alexander J. Funcheon, Pfc. Allen B. Jaynes, Staff Sgt. Jay E. Martin, Sgt. Mikeal W. Miller, and Eric L. Snell, who lost their lives while serving in Baghdad with the 3rd Battalion, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry.

We will provide video or post pictures of the event. God bless our fallen military, and God bless the USA!
