Run for the Fallen 2008: Final Day Event

Final Flag

Run for the Fallen finished its apolitical memorial run at Arlington National Cemetery on Sunday, August 24, 2008. From a quick glance, there were more than 250 runs organized across the globe, all running with one purpose in mind: to Run for the Fallen. While we are still tallying the total miles of remembrance runs, we have determined the mileage for roughly 85% of the runs (well, those who emailed us anyway). Spanning ten different countries (France, Brazil, England, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, S. Korea, Indonesia, China and Tanzania) and over 43 U.S. states, there were 9,145 participants who collectively ran 35,725 miles for the fallen. There were also six miles climbed vertically for the fallen.

Great idea! I ran a search on http://www.icasualties.org and found that - from the greater Omaha (NE) metro area - there have been 13 service people who have lost their lives in service to our country. Based on that, I’ve approached our local running club with proposal to sponsor either a 13K (8 mile) or 13 mile (half-marathon) on August 24 in conjunction with the Run for the Fallen’s finish.

THANK YOU Girls Scouts of Coronado, CA!

Last night, I found that we are 50 name cards short for the flag markers. Who could answer the call to as a service project? The Girls Scouts. As I walked out of church this morning, the local Girl Scouts were setting up in the park, when asked if they could help, the girls from Troops: 5043 (junior), 801 (cadette), 5067 (junior) and 5164 (brownie) came through.

They were fantastic, and truly represented the true spirit os the scouts…to serve.

  9. May Vukotich 06.12.08 / 8am

Last night, my husband and six-year old daughter Natalia, and I worked on our little stack of 25 name cards. We talked about the soldiers who sacrificed their lives and we cried. After we finished our cards Natalia said, “Tell Ms. Shannon (Cleary) that we can do 100 more cards and I’ll do 50 of them myself.” We’re so excited to be part of your amazing event. THANK YOU for all your hard work.

August 24 will include three more runners, The Vukotich Family with a pledge of 6 miles (3 miles from Stefan - 2 miles from May and 1 mile from 6 year old Natalia).

  10. Michelle 06.13.08 / 5pm

Thank you SO much for doing this! As the wife of a deployed soldier and the friend of some of the fallen you are running for, you really have no idea how much this means to us. God bless you!

  11. Erika 06.14.08 / 6am

I graduated from Hamilton in 2006 and remember the news of Michael Cleary’s death. My husband is currently serving a 15 month tour in Iraq and my thoughts are of our soldiers every day.

Since my husband left in November 2007, we have lost several friends. As a military spouse, officer’s wife, and Hamilton College alum, I truly appreciate your commitment to honoring our troops.

Today, Flag Day, and the start of your trek across the country, is the day my husband is due home for his mid-tour leave. I am excited with anticipation to see my husband and wish you luck in your journey.

Thank you for remembering. BRAVE RIFLES…..Sabre Ready! 2-3 ACR Fort Hood, TX

  16. SSgt Noah Stamps 06.15.08 / 7am

I have just heard about runforthefallen.org on CNN and wanted to relay how elated I am that you are doing something of this nature to memorialize the fallen from OIF. However, I am concerned that the website only advertises fallen Soldiers. I am an Airman in the United States Air Force and also a veteran of OIF. It is a common mistake to label all military members as Soldiers, but this term is geared towards the Army specifically. We are Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines. We all play our own parts within the military. Although the term Soldier is honorable and seems all-inclusive to most civilians, it is incorrect. Please recognize and respect the sacrifice of each branch’s servicemen and women. Again, thank you for what you’re doing and I wish you good luck. Be safe, SSgt Noah Stamps USAF

We would be honored to join you on August 24th to run for several members of our military from the Lehigh Valley Area in PA and from across the country who so bravely made the ultimate sacrifice. We are a collective group of approximately 200 people who join in celebration of our freedom and appreciation of those who provide it for us every July 4th at our own fundraising event . We began hosting this event since the beginning of the war on terror in Afghanistan and it has grown every year as we bring awareness to our friends and family of what is actually sacrificed in the name of freedom. As I watched CNN tonight, I was moved by your cause and think it is a great way to bring local and national awareness to the people of this country who sometimes forget what is given for them. At our July 4th event, we pledge to spread the news of your cause and organize a local run through the Lehigh Valley area. My brother is a Marine currenlty serving in Iraq. We ask for prayers for his safe return and for all of those who remain in the fight. We offer our deepest gratitude for all those who have given their lives for this great country and for their fellow Americans. We pray for peace for the families and friends of our fallen heroes that struggle with their loss every day.

Happy to join you on August 24th!

God Bless you all and God Bless America!

    Bethlehem, PA

My nephew, Cpl Martza, Maurice-USMC/Iraq, and my cousin Tsgt Charlie, Michelle-USAF/Iraq. As I run and huff & puff-I’ll be thinking of those who gave the ultimate price for love of country and those who are even now in harm’s way. I know I’ll cry some, but I’ll remember the air I’m breathing, the pain I’ll experience while running in this beautiful countryside, I’ll be grateful and humble because it is a gift given to me as an American to enjoy for the rest of my days. I love and support all our military and their families.

It makes me proud to have served and to see the outpouring of backing I am recieving to promote this for miles for you guys and lady and for the service members we have lost. You are to be admired for your accomplishments.

This poem is perfect, for the runners to start each day with………..

“I give you this one thought to keep~
I am with you still, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone~
I am with you still, in each new dawn.”

    Native American poem

Hi. Well, I’ve only been away from the Run for 4 full days, and I miss all of you. The ‘healing’ that so many have spoken of, may actually have begun for me after two and a half years of being somewhat lost to grief. We have met so many amazing people through this journey…from Mary in Perris Lake to Pastor Dan in Indio, the folks at the Best Western’s in Twenty-nine Palms and Parker, AZ…Landaker’s, Martinez’s, Buck’s…countless. See you in a week in Kansas. Thank you. We hold each other up…

Okay ya’ll from Mississippi, or surrounding areas who want to participate….unfortunately I received word from Run for the Fallen that we were not following some of the guidelines, but our heart is in the right place. They encouraged us to continue our run, just to donate to one of their listed charities…the way I see it is that the money was going to go to one anyway. So, we are still doing our 5K the way we planned and now calling it 5K for Mississippi’s Fallen Soldiers! It is going to be a great event, and I could not be more excited how it is falling into place so smoothly. For anyone interested and interested in a 5K registration form,. please contact me pamperedarmywife@yahoo.com for all of the details. Thanks!! Hope for this to be a huge success…we have people coming from all over the state for our fallen. Thanks and hope to see you there and meet each and every one of you. Our fallen are not forgotten!!

On Friday, July 18th I’ll be running in memory of Lance Cpl Matthew Snyder of Finksburg, Maryland. I’ll be running in Staten Island, NY

I met his mom through a mutual friend via email. Julie and I had been emailing for almost a year until we met for the first time in Topeka, Kansas on Flag Day - Saturday, June 14th of this year. Julie and I were in Topeka, Kansas for The Reading - a Reading of the names of the fallen from Iraq and Afghanistan. Julie Read the name of her son Matthew Snyder - killed in Iraq On March 3, 2006.

In an email to Julie shortly after I came home I mentioned that my birthday was July 18th. Julie responded back with an urgent “please read this ASAP’ message. In Julie’s message back to me she informed me her son and I share the same birthday. In all the emails over the year we never spoke of birthdays.

A hello to you from North West England. I’ve been in touch with my family in different parts of the US and put together a “Family Challange” with my siblings and children. We will be running or walking various distances in Wyoming, New Jersey, Delaware and Illinois as well as over here in Lancashire, England. There is a strong tie to the Armed Forces in my family and each one of us is directly related to someone who has served in combat. Our family tribute is our way to say thank you to those who have served and gone before us. This is a noble and good thing you are all doing. Bless.

Wife and I rode our motorcycle to church. We have thousands of people but no where equal to the more than 4000 fallen. Our return trip we stopped at several flags and each one is numbered. Please maintain the damaged flags and missing information in your area. In my thirties our 2 Marine sons watched as I trained to run a Marathon. Today 1 mile was enough for my untrained 52 year old body. My wife took my picture and I went for my cool down. I realized my 2 Marine sons are willing to die for my freedom and yours. I also thought of the revitilized pain and sadness of these losses that only our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can heal. God bless all of you who braved these thoughts and feelings. Then I put my flag up for all to see.

Hello from the 4 Corners area (actually Cortez, CO), well today on the final day of the RFTF, we all met at the Cortez-Parque de Vida, registered the participants (about 34 well-energetic, bright eyed bushy tailed folks came out for the support of the RFTF final day. We had the Cortez VFW Post 75, present the colors and played TAPS. The Cortez Blue Star Moms were in attendence and some of our neighboring friends from New Mexico, whom they’ve lost their sons in the Iraqi & Enduring Freedom campaign.
They were the Sgt. Clifton J. Yazzie and Lyle J. Cambridge’s family, also walked and ran for our active duty family members that are currently serving. Also the local friends of Cortez (Garner’s, Rivas’ and community walkers). Today, we had a total of 154 miles donated to the RFTF event.
We are very fortunate that the RFTF campaign went thru our town of Cortez, THANK YOU RFTF folks, bless you folks and for the families that lost their loved ones. They are not forgotten and will also be remembered in our prayers and thoughts. Thank you to the folks that helped make this RFTF walk/run event easy and for your donations and time from getting away from your busy schedules. God Bless, Again.

A friend forwarded me an e-mail with information about this event yesterday morning. I haven’t gone for a run in over a year, but after work, I laced up an old pair of sneakers and went for a run around the block. I was hoping to somehow make it 1 mile, but I felt surprisingly strong, and ran until the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay drove me back inside. Checked my route on gmap-pedometer.com, and found that I had done a little over 2 miles. God bless the fallen, and those still serving, for all their sacrifices and services.

  283. Rich Cecetka 08.25.08 / 6pm

I live in Ord, Nebraska,a small town of about 2,000. On August 24th we had a “Run (walk, bike, even some rolling on skates!) for the Fallen”. I set up an information board and talked to people about the “Run for the Fallen” project as they came through the park on our hike /bike trail. I had 50 people “dedicate” over 200 miles to your cause, and the military men and women that have fallen while in the service of our country. We spent our time thinkng about all that they have done for us, and I’m sure thanked them in our own special way.

  284. Brian Smith 08.25.08 / 8pm

On Sunday, August 24th, as a Vietnam Veteran I felt honored to run 12 miles for 12 fallen heroes. I hope that in some small way this will help to keep the memory of these heroes alive. My heroic companions on Sunday were:

    Timothy Craig Kiser
    Mike T. Sonoda Jr.
    Paul C. Neubauer
    Stephen W. Frank
    Ralph J. “Jay” Harting III
    Daniel R. Scheile
    Brian E. Dunlap
    Jerry L. Bonifacio Jr.
    Jorge Luis Pena-Romero
    Brian K. Derks
    Alfredo B. Silva
    Kevin William Prince

May all of our heroes and their families find peace in the knowledge that they are in the thoughts of millions of Americans every day.

I would also like to thank you for allowing my sister to take part on Thursday August 21st. She placed her sons flag our Hero Sgt. Christopher Simpson. On August 24th, I woke up to the sound of thunder. It was the remnants of tropical storm Faye trying to keep us home…

She didn’t win though. 25 came out to honor our fallen, and collectively we ran 137 miles for our heroes.

What an awesome thing you all started. Thank you for letting us be part of it.

As a runner and a Marine dad, I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to do my part in honoring the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I dedicated each one of my 21 miles on August 24th to the 18 members of my son’s Battalion killed in Iraq plus one each for two USMC son’s of families we know. The extra mile was for all of them. They are always in our thoughts, and I will carry their spirits with me during the Marine Corps Marathon in October.
Thank you for the dedication and passion in honoring these brave men and women.

On a picturesque Cape Cod morning on August 24, 58 runners (and one black Labrador Retriever) from throughout Massachusetts and as far away as Connecticut and New York completed the 5 Mile Run for the Fallen in South Yarmouth, Mass.

Runners honored the following 5 service men and women from Cape Cod:

United States Army Sergeant Mark R. Vecchione Eastham KIA Ramadi, Iraq July 18, 2006

United States Army Sergeant Alexander H. Fuller Centerville KIA Baghdad, Iraq January 25, 2007

United States Army Staff Sergeant Alicia A. Birchett Mashpee KIA Baghdad, Iraq August 9, 2007

United States Marine Corps PFC Daniel McGuire Mashpee KIA Fallujah, Iraq August, 14, 2008
United States Army PFC Paul E. Conlon Mashpee KIA Afghanistan August 15, 2008

Runners also honored other service men and women: family members, friends and others who are important to them.

Lt. Steven Xiarhos of the Yarmouth Police Department, the organizer of the event, ran in honor of the following US Marine Corps members in addition to the Cape Cod service men and women:

USMC Lance Corporal Alexander S. Arrendondo KIA Iraq August 25, 2004

USMC Lance Corporal Patrick J. Gallagher KIA Iraq April 2, 2006

USMC Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter KIA Iraq April 22, 2008

USMC Lance Corporal Eric P. Valdepenas KIA Iraq September 4, 2006

A special guest of honor—two time Purple Heart recipient United States Army Corporal Stephen Johnson of Mashpee—led the way and was recognized for his heroism in battle and dedication to our country.

The event was a great success—raising over $900.00 for the Wounded Warrior Project—and helped demonstrate steadfast support for our troops as they continue to fight our country’s battles and help people in need all over the world.

Many of the participants requested that we hold this run every year to honor our fallen service men and women. We are now planning to do so!

  306. Patti Haren 09.02.08 / 6pm

finished 11 miles on the 24th and 4 more to complete my goal of 5 each for Tom Maholic, Rob Pirelli and Pat Kutschbach…Green Berets and friends of our son Tim, currently deployed in Iraq. Thank you for the opportunity to honour all our fallen heroes! My husband walked 2.2 miles and our 17 year old son canoed approx 7 miles. We created bibs from you site with photos of our 3 heroes with biographies; attatched them to flags and planted them at our town’s veterans memorial in the cemetary…carried a flag with same as I walked…several folks stopped to see what the bib said…they all thanked you guys at RFTF for getting the run going…Thank you and God Bless our military and their families…

  307. Mary Donahue 09.04.08 / 11pm

We want to send out a heartfelt thanks to the organizers and runners/walkers/bikers of this awe-inspiring event.
This event was brought to our attention from “Being There-Reaching Out”, a group that offers support for Wisconsin’s Gold Star families. This group held a run/walk from the VA hospital to Wood Cemetery in Milwaukee on 8/24.
Our son, LCPL Rich Warner, USMCR , along with Brent Vroman, was KIA 12-13-04 in Iraq. They were members of 2/24 Fox Co. out of Milwaukee, WI. Incidentally, the final day of the “Run for the Fallen” coincided with the return of Fox Co. from their 2nd tour of duty in Iraq.
There were seven members from Fox Co. who made a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, those without a voice, without the freedoms we take for granted.
Thanks to those who ran Day 18 for Danny Wyatt; Day 19 for Bobby Warns (Golf Co. Madison, WI); Day 20 for Brian Prening; Day 22 for Brent and Rich;Day 24 for Travis Wichlacz and August 22nd for Ricky Nelson and Dean Opicka.
I know Rich would’ve loved the run through beautiful Colorado (Monte Vista to Mule Shoe).
The families of Fox Co. were made aware of this event and asked everyone to run walk or “7″ miles or “7″minutes for our seven guardian warriors.
Please let us know of future runs for the fallen.
Thanks again to all for making a difference.
    Take Care,
    Mary and Pat Donahue

Hendersonville, TN - The following was read by the author at the short memorial service prior to our run:

    May we never forget
The Sacrifice that many have made.

First, may we never forget, the sacrifice that was made:
by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, on our
behalf, that enables each of us to be forgiven of our sins,
if we will confess our sin, and accept Him into our life.

May we never forget the sacrifice, that was made:
by our forefathers, who risked all that they had, to come to a new, unknown land, to do what had never been done before -
establish a government, made of laws to rule men, rather than rule by men -
through thick and thin, in hardship and want, they stayed the course, and won the cause.

May we never forget the sacrifice, that many have made:
throughout the years, who fought valiantly, for the cause of building a nation of free men, to have the right of assembly, worship, speech, and election, each according to their own heart.

May we never forget the sacrifice, that many have made: with the shedding of their own blood, on foreign lands, in order to preserve our freedoms at home, as well as, help other peoples become free, as well.

Bless these families that have lost their loved one, and bear the scars of the price that was paid. Bless those who are still in harms way. May they return, in honor, and knowledge that they did their best.

May we, that survive, make them proud, that they served, and many times sacrificed their life, to preserve ours. May their sacrifice not be in vain.

    May God continue to bless us;
    May we continue the fight for freedom;
Above all, may we strive to be a blessing to God.

  311. Luanne- cub scout pack 332 09.13.08 / 11am

We honored and remembered fallen soldiers from our hometown of Wildomar, California on August 24, 2008. A total of 36 scouts and family members ran one mile to honor LcPl Justin Hunt- US Marines, Sgt. Nathan Bouchard- US Army, and PFC Daniel Ray Parker- US Army. Before the run began, we took a moment of silence at the Memorial Wall standing in front of Lake Elsinore High School and read a poem that spread the message “freedom is free.” We had scouts between the ages of 1st grade through high school attend the memorial and the run, along with family members. Doing this run showed the scouts what it meant to ‘run for the fallen’. We are very proud of our cub scouts and boy scouts. Cub Scout Pack 332

This was a great idea. I found out about it after the event. I looked for my husband, Lt. Col. John Stein and his crew who died on March 23, 2003 in Afghanistan. No information could be matched. Were they forgotten? Please respond.

  313. Carol Barnett 10.07.08 / 2pm

    Barbara,
Run for the Fallen’s mission this past summer, was to place flags and sign cards for those service
members killed in OIF, they ended with #4,086.
All remaining casualties from OIF along with all fallen service members from OEF were honored and remembered on Aug. 24th. Anyone killed in or died from casulties in Afghanistan, were honored on that last day in ANC. If Kris or someone else has not been in touch with you already, I am positive they will be–I can assure you that no one was missed intentionally. I was a volunteer in Virginia & was asked the same question by a friend of James Walton, also killed in Afghanistan, now his card has been placed in flickr & I am sure they will put one for your husband & all the crew if you help with the names. If you would like to email me, I will see what I can do to help.

I was very fortunate to be able to run in memory of Adam Crumpler of Charleston, West Virginia who died in Iraq in 2005 at the age of 19. I was recently at a ceremony in the State Capitol of West Virginia in the Governor’s reception room for the Home of the Brave Quilts being distributed to Gold Star families. I had been introduced to Emma Johnson who was to receive one of the quilts. As the names were read out and the familys went to receive their quilts the name of Adam Crumpler was read. I did not make the connection until later when the ceremony had ended and I had stepped out into the Capitol Rotunda and realized how I knew that name. I did not know personally any of the fallen and had picked Adam’s name from the Run for the Fallen web site back in August of 2008. I reentered the Governor’s office and approached Mrs. Johnson. She asked why I had a sheepish smile and I asked her if she had heard of the Run for the Fallen. When she said yes, I told her that I had run in Adam’s memory. She burst into tears and hugged me and we both comforted each other. I am in Charleston today and am on my way to meet her and see the scrapbook that she is creating in Adam’s memory. She wants to include the photo of me running with the Run for the Fallen t-shirt in her memory book of Adam’s life. I am so honored to be able to contribute in some way for one of our patriotic fallen servicemen. Adam was so young and just starting life, but he wanted to help preserve the American way of life which was challenged by 9/11. I want to send out blessings of Peace and Love to the families of all who have lost loved ones this Christmas Season. Thank you to all who remember their sons and daughters and have been brought together by this wonderful group, The Run for the Fallen.

Have your say

About

Beginning June 14, 2008, a small team of runners ran across America to raise awareness about the lives of those service members who fought, to activate their memories and keep their spirits alive, to support organizations that help wounded veterans and the families of those killed (Wounded Warrior Project, Yellow Ribbon Fund, Gold Star Family Support Center, and the 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary Memorial Fund), and to aid the healing process for those Americans whose lives have been affected by the war.

On the final day of the 2008 memorial run, over 9000 runners in nine countries and forty-three states collectively ran almost 36,000 miles in honor and remembrance of all fallen service members killed in both Iraq and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom).

We encourage all Americans to continue to honor our fallen service members. Run one mile for a service member on August 22/23, 2009, the 2nd anniversary weekend of Run for the Fallen’s finish at Arlington National Cemetery. It is on this weekend that we run in honor and remembrance of all fallen service members killed in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

We refuse any political affiliation or agenda, but simply honor those who have fought, and those who have fallen under the American flag.

Download a runner’s bib that you can wear when you run for the fallen.
