The American Fallen Soldiers Project

February 22nd, 2009 No comments

I received this link from Judy D’Albert. After reading the news story she sent, I wanted to post a link to the story about the Soldiers Project and to highlight one portrait unveiling in North Texas.

From Judy:
“A presentation to Brandon Meyer’s family will be happening in the Texas State House on Tuesday. He is buried at Pacific View in Corona del Mar next door to Harbor Day School, even though his family is from Canyon TX . He loved the ocean and came to Concordia University here in Irvine for a short time before joining the Army. Those of us nearby will try to honor him on the special days on behalf of his family.”

Cpl. John P. Sigsbee

Army Cpl. John P. Sigsbee, a resident of Waterville, NY was a member of the 101st Airborne Division 32nd Cavalry Unit based in Fort Campbell, Ky. He was wounded by a roadside bomb in July 2006; yet was killed Jan. 16, 2008, during his second tour of duty. He was 21.

Exactly one year after John’s death, the Waterville U.S. Post Office was dedicated in honor of Cpl. Sigsbee. The bill to officially rename the post office was sponsored by U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri, D-Utica, who attended the ceremony with other local officials, including Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente and District Attorney Scott McNamara.

His aunt Cindy Woods said Sigsbee was a determined man who accomplished a great deal in his short life.

“He knew exactly what he wanted to do, and he knew what he was willing to do to achieve it,” Woods said.

“John wasn’t just a friend in passing,” she said. “If you were lucky enough to call him your friend, you knew he was there for you through thick and thin.”

Nathan Bruckenthal’s mile

June 28th, 2008 2 comments

Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal always went in for the active approach. In high school he was a volunteer firefighter and spoke of either making that his profession or becoming a police officer. “He would come to almost all the (fire) calls that he could,” said Michael Gabbianelli, a friend and fellow volunteer firefighter. “He was always there to help people.” Bruckenthal, 24, of Smithtown, N.Y., died April 24 when suicide bombers in boats attacked pumping stations in the Persian Gulf. He was based at the the Coast Guard Air Station in the Miami suburb of Opa-Locka, Fla. The Ridgefield, Conn., native was the first member of the Coast Guard to die in battle since Vietnam. Bruckenthal played football in high school and was involved with a club that helped students who were new to the school adjust. Bruckenthal was a month away from finishing his second stint in Iraq returning home to his wife, pregnant with their first child. Survivors also include his parents and sister.

Today we had the wonderful opportunity to meet the parents of 1st Lt. Jared M. Landaker.

Running through Big Bear Lake, we ran on Route 38 towards Fawnskin, which was commissioned in honor of 1st Lt. Jared M. Landaker. The ten mile stretch of highway was dedicated on May 5, 2008, just two days after Jared’s 27th birthday. Joe Landaker met us on his motorcycle, rode with us to Jared’s sign, and posed with us for this picture. We accepted Joe’s invitation to the house, where he entertained us with stories about Jared and the Run for the Wall.

Jared flew CH-46 helicopters in Iraq, and his helo was credited with saving 91 lives. Jared and six others were shot down on Feb. 7, 2007. Jared’s parents, Joe and Laura, help establish Seven Stars Foundation in honor of those killed in that crash. We will run for Jared on August 5, near Noah, TN.

Both Joe and Laura are two very special people, and we are proud to run for Jared Landaker.
